The Great Last Week of October Trek Down The Blue Ridge Parkway started in Blowing Rock, NC, a weird little town just down the hill from Boone, NC. Boone is an Appalachian college town not much different than other small college towns across the nation. Appalachian State University is home to well known author Orson Scott Card. Moses H. Cone was one of the key contributors of funds for the building of Watauga College, now known as Appalachian State University.

Our first stop after leaving Boone and hopping on the Blue Ridge Parkway early Monday morning, was the Moses H. Cone Memorial Park just a few miles from Blowing Rock.
The picture on the right is of a tree in front of the Moses H. Cone House. This photo was taken with the sun directly behind the tree. A little work with Adobe made the low clouds visible.
This is another view from in front of the Moses H. Cone Manor House. Three lakes were built on the property by Moses Cone and then stocked with bass and trout.
Work on the Moses H. Cone Manor Home began in 1899 and was completed two years later. Moses died in 1908. The house is now used as a craft shop. It's difficult to visit and not buy something.
The Cone house was a nice stop and Louise found a beautiful pair of earrings while shopping in the craft store. The temperature was around freezing when we left for Grandfather Mountain, however the wind was blowing quite nicely, enough to close down Grandfather Mountain anyway, so we went on to Linville Falls and took a walk.
This fire truck in Asheville came to the rescue of a three year-old girl who was playing with the fire alarm. Even as we were being shoved out of the Hotel we were told that there was no fire.
Go figure.
Across the street from the entrance to the Cone House was this Blue Bird house with a grand view behind it.
